Nanshan Antiques
Chinese Fine Art in Your Hands
A millennium-old craft, guarded from generation to generation in the mountains of Zhuolu County, Hebei Province, China.
Where Time
Slows Down
In the mountains of Zhuolu County, there lies a quiet village called Nanjangshi — the birthplace of Nanshan Wenwan Walnuts. We have inherited the art of Chinese hand-played walnuts for generations, bringing a touch of Eastern elegance to people around the world who love traditional culture and craftsmanship.
A History Spanning Two Thousand Years
From the Silk Road to the Imperial Court — the journey of Wenwan Walnuts
Origins on the Silk Road
Walnuts (ancient name "Hutao") were introduced to Central China via the Silk Road during the Han and Sui dynasties — initially prized as food and medicine. Soon, people discovered the unique charm in their hard shells and intricate grains, and the embryonic form of Wenwan Walnuts was quietly born.
From Court to Literati
This refined pastime spread from the imperial court to scholars and nobles. Nobles cherished walnuts as precious gifts, while scholars placed them on their desks as a symbol of elegance and integrity. It was during this period that the art of walnut carving gradually took shape.
The Golden Age
The Ming and Qing dynasties marked the zenith of Wenwan Walnuts. Emperors themselves were devoted enthusiasts — Emperor Zhu Youxiao carved them by hand, while Emperor Qianlong composed poetry in their honour. Together with thumb rings and birdcages, they became the celebrated "Three Treasures of Beile."
A Living Heritage
Nanshan Wenwan carries this unbroken tradition into the modern world. Rooted in the millennium-old fertile soil of Nanjangshi Village, each pair of walnuts is personally selected from orthodox old trees, paired and maintained according to traditional standards — a bridge between ancient craft and contemporary hands.
More Than a Plaything
Three pillars of Chinese wisdom carried in every pair of walnuts
Health & Wellness
Rubbing walnuts in the palm exercises the fingers, stimulates meridian points, and soothes the mind — a centuries-old practice of natural health preservation.
Aesthetic Beauty
Their grains resemble mountains and rivers; their patina deepens like jade over time. Each pair is a unique natural work of art, shaped by both nature and the human hand.
Cultural Symbolism
"Walnut" is homophonic with "harmony and unity" in Chinese — carrying generations of good wishes for completeness, harmony, and longevity.
Rooted in the Fields,
Reaching the World
As an outstanding cultural inheritor, I have always adhered to my original intention — rooted in the fertile soil of Nanjangshi Village, diligently cultivating every walnut tree with unremitting agricultural perseverance.
I firmly believe that good Wenwan Walnuts start with careful cultivation in the fields. Only by adhering to traditional planting techniques, upholding craftsmanship, and striving for excellence can we grow walnuts with hard texture and beautiful grains.
I am willing to take walnuts as a bridge and inheritance as my responsibility — promoting this elegant art treasure from Chinese villages to every corner of the world.
Traditional Planting
Every walnut tree nurtured using time-honoured techniques passed down through generations in Nanjangshi Village.
